The Devouring Mother | Wed. Nov. 27th, 2019 | 6pm – 8pm

$10.00$20.00

C.G. Jung writes, “whoever sunders himself from the mother longs to get back to the mother. This longing can easily turn into a consuming passion which threatens all that has been won. The mother then appears on the one hand as the supreme goal, and on the other hand as the most frightful danger – the ‘Terrible Mother.’”

In this seminar, we will discuss the Great Mother in her guise as Devourer and grave, digging into this fertile earth to uncover her influence and purpose in our lives.

Tickets are $20 for the general public, and $10 for U of T Jungian Society members.

What is the archetypal Dark Mother and how does she appear in our lives?

According to C.G. Jung, the positive Mother is  with associated with sympathy, spiritual wisdom that transcends reason, any helpful instinct or impulse, all that is benign, all that is cherishes and sustaining, that fosters growth and fertility.  Magic transformation, rebirth and the underworld are presided over by the mother.

But all archetypes are dual in nature, light and dark, positive and negative.  What of the dark side of the Great Mother?  What is her domain, and what purpose or function does she have psychologically?

The Dark Mother rules the grave, the world of the dead, anything secret, hidden or dark.  She infuses anything that devours, seduces, poisons, or is terrifying and inescapable like fate.

The Dark Mother also works counter to growth and fertility in our lives.  What she has birthed, she eats back up.

In this seminar…

We will explore some expressions of the Devouring Mother archetype in literature and popular culture and discuss how she can work in our own lives to undo growth and eat up our vitality.
