Dreams picture, in symbolic form, the situation in the psyche from the point of view of the unconscious.

They are “invariably seeking to express something that the ego does not know and does not understand.”1
Moreover, “the dream not only fails to obey our will but very often stands in flagrant opposition to our conscious intentions”2

In this seminar…

We will look at Jung’s theory of the structure of dreams. We will explore how the dream expresses compensations to conscious attitudes and supplies what consciousness does not know.  Through an examination of several real dreams including one of Jung’s own, we will attempt to apprehend their compensatory function.
